ok, added a pic of planed piece of the mystery wood. I might add when cut it has a mild spicy/cinnamon scent (not unlike a faint version of brazilian rosewood, but without the flowery part). Measured density (1,05 gcm-3) and speed of sound (4200 ms-1) - and that sums up all i know about the wood. oh, and it rings nicely. and thanks for the replies, folks. I don´t believe it´s kingwood - no violets/purples and different smell. Honduran rosewood? to good to be true, i guess. i can just call it Central/South American Mysterywood. |

I would also go with Honduran rosewood. If the color is slightly off, it could be Pau Ferro. |

It looks like rosewood but it may be Brazilian cherry (jatoba). I was recently given some and the hard-wood supplier called it jatoba, very hard and splintery (watch out for slivers). Mine was used for pallets or boxes and has nail holes. check the density. Bob

Thanks for the replies, guys. I do think you're being too generous, though. I have some more amazon rosewood and it doesn't seem to smell much. Also color is much more chocolate brown, but colors do vary to some extent. If it is amazon RW I'd be very happy, I will try to do the fluorescence test. It's not pau Ferro either, I have lots of it and it taps like cardboard and doesn't smell - at least my stuff, maybe there's better pau Ferro elsewhere. Thanks all for playing along. Hi Miguel, The Pau Ferro I have has a strong spicy smell when sawn. I do like the smell, but try to avoid it. I bought 50 or 60 bd ft from a dealer who had bought it for a pistol grip maker who canceled the order. There is a lot of color variation with the wood, but it seems more close grained (smaller pores) than most of the rosewoods I have used. I have never noticed any light colored sap wood similar to what your wood shows , but then I'm not sure there is any sap wood on the pau ferro I have. It is difficult to tell from a picture what wood it might be but amazon or honduran rosewood seems reasonable. |

Here's a pic of 3 different looking pieces of Amazon out of the stash. I describe them as orangish-brown, dark reddsih, and dark. Your piece looks like the dark reddish to me. |

My vote is for a Platymiscium species. Many different species throughout Central and South America. The end grain shot is what points me in that direction. Common names: Macawood, Macacauba, Granadillo, Coyote. |
